Picking a lift kit sounds simple until you start reading spec sheets. Every option promises more clearance and a better stance, but the right choice depends entirely on how you use your truck. Here's the difference between the three main paths — spacers, coilovers, and long travel — and which one fits your build.

Spacer Lifts: The Budget Entry Point

A spacer lift adds height by inserting a spacer above the factory strut or spring, effectively pre-loading the stock suspension. It's the cheapest way to gain 1-2 inches of clearance for larger tires, and installation is straightforward on most platforms.

The catch: you're still running factory-valved shocks and springs that weren't designed for the added height or a heavier tire/wheel package. Ride quality on washboard roads or at speed off-road won't improve — and can get worse — because the damping characteristics haven't changed. Spacers are a reasonable choice if you mostly daily-drive and want the tire clearance without a big budget, but most owners outgrow them quickly.

Coilover Systems: The Do-It-All Upgrade

A coilover suspension system replaces the entire strut assembly with a purpose-built, adjustable unit. This is the sweet spot for the majority of overland and weekend off-road builds: real gains in ride quality, adjustable height and compression settings, and enough durability for regular trail use without touching the fenders or frame. Long Travel Kits: Built for Speed

The goal isn't just ground clearance — it's the ability to run desert speeds over rough terrain without bottoming out or beating up the chassis.

These kits cost significantly more and often require some fabrication or bushing/geometry adjustments, but if you're building toward high-speed desert running or serious long-travel trail use, nothing else gets you there. It's overkill for a daily driver and unnecessary if your trail use is mostly technical, low-speed rock crawling.

Match the kit to your actual use, not your Instagram feed. Daily driver with occasional trail time and a modest tire upsize: spacer lift.
