Overlanding rigs carry a lot of weight that stock suspension was never designed for — rooftop tents, drawer systems, auxiliary fuel and water, recovery gear, sometimes a full slide-out kitchen. All of that sits high and heavy, and it changes what you actually need from your shocks. Here's how to think about it.
Why Stock Shocks Struggle Under Load
Factory shocks are valved for an unloaded or lightly loaded truck. Add a few hundred pounds of gear up top and behind the cab, and you get excess body roll, harsh rebound over washboard, and shocks that heat up and fade on long, rough forest roads. This is the single most common reason a stock-suspension overland build feels unstable loaded up, even if the tires and lift look right.
Load-Rated Valving Matters More Than Lift Height
The most overlooked spec on a shock for overlanding is its valving and spring rate relative to your actual loaded weight, not just how many inches of lift it provides. A Bilstein 5100 series shock is a proven, cost-effective option for moderate loads and a mild lift, giving noticeably better control than stock without the price of a full coilover.
For heavier builds — long-range fuel, water, and a rooftop tent all at once — a remote-reservoir shock from FOX or King handles heat dissipation far better on sustained washboard or corrugated roads, where standard shocks can fade after 20-30 minutes of continuous input.
Front and Rear Aren't the Same Problem
Overland weight is rarely balanced front to rear — a rear rack, drawers, and water usually push most of the added weight over the rear axle. It's common (and often correct) to run a different spring rate or shock tune front vs. rear rather than assuming a matched kit off the shelf is right for your load. Don't Forget the Rest of the Suspension System
